The best way I know of to kill the X server is "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace".  
Unfortunately, many modern distros (I'm not sure if Suse is one of them) 
have it set up to respawn the server.  If that's the case, I don't know 
what to tell you.  Someone else might have to help you there.
