The best way I know of to kill the X server is "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace". Unfortunately, many modern distros (I'm not sure if Suse is one of them) have it set up to respawn the server. If that's the case, I don't know what to tell you. Someone else might have to help you there.

I have found a 64-bit driver for my nvidia graphics card running Suse 9.0. I run the driver using the sh command and it comes up telling me I have X server running and I need to exit out of it before the driver will install. I can find the command line commands to kill a process. Is this the best way? Is there a cleaner way of exiting out of X, or is the command line killing of the process the way to go? (something akin to the old starting windows in ms-dos mode, maybe?)
