Mail DOES NOT come into the shell account.... I just tried sending mail to it and no luck.

So, I sent an email to the hosting company to ask them about it...

In the end, it seems that you cannot set up a mailing list unless you have 1 of the following 2 things:

1) A shell account that receives email (so you can forward that mail on to ????)

OR

2) The ability to set up email addresses that alias to a file (right?)

Is that right?

Thanks!

Maybe yes. You say you have a shell account on this server (at a
hosting company presumably) . Does mail actually come into that shell
account? If you put a .forward file in your home directory will your
mail go where the .forward file tells it to? If the answer to these
questions is yes then you can use procmail and smartlist. Otherwise
you're probably stuck. Then again, your ISP (or host) might provide
mailing list services. You should probably ask them unless this is a
personal project just to learn how to set up a mailing list.

You say "email aliases"...

I can create "email aliases" through the web based interface my
hosting service gives me (they call them aliases but they are more
like forwards).... I can create [EMAIL PROTECTED] and have
it point to any other address.

but these aliases are different than what you are talking about right?

Hello All,

I don't know much about mailing lists so I thought this would be a
good place to start...

(I have a couple of questions).

Can mailing list software be installed in my home directory? (You
see, my problem is that I am thinking about starting a mailing list,
but I only have access to my home directory on this particular box).

If you can get email aliases added to your account you might want to have a look at SmartList <http://www.procmail.org/>. It fits your description pretty well and is supposed to be very full-featured.
