I also don't know about not having 'known' issues, but
I'm running Suse 9.1 on an HP pavilion zt3000 (custom
ordered) and it runs like a champ.  I did pay $20 for
a lifetime license from driverloader to run my
integrated wireless card, but that's only because I
was too lazy work around it.  There are free ways to
do that, I was just tired of them.  I have also heard
that iBooks/Powerbooks play very nice with linux.  I
have also heard that IBM thinkpads are fairly
linux-friendly.  I think mostly it's a matter of how
much trouble you are willing to go through to get
everything working, and which notebook you like.
