my guess is that your xorg.conf or XFree86.conf is confused (whichever you
have...  i'm not sure which fedora has...)  The file would be in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf (or /etc/X11/XFree86.conf).  You'll need to look in
there and make sure that the configuration is all set up for your
laptop's screen... When the settings are a little wrong, they do weird
things.  If they're really wrong, they refuse to start X...  I'm afraid
that's all the help i can give without more information...
