Out of curiousity, why do you want bash to have a different tab width?
I'm trying to think when I use a printed tab in bash, and I'm running
short of ideas.

Unless you mean in your editor of choice (vim, emacs, etc). That's a
different issue altogether (and can start a number of flamewars).
