which IM?  Gaim?  If so,  you can click on the addresses button and
there is a checkbox beneath each address you use that says "auto
login" and you can just uncheck any of those that are checked.  I
think that there is a way to stop Gaim from starting up automatically
too, but I'm on my Windows box right now, so I don't know for sure.
