[newbies] JAVA on my system

Please help:  how do I get JAVA onto my system (Linux Fedora Core 3)?  First of all: I don't know how to do it.  Second: I've heard if I don't do it right, then JAVA will disappear from my system each time I upgrade it by downloading and installing updates.
