PRIŠTINA -- Based on a NATO Council decision, KFOR will today hand over
its duties related to the protection of Gazimestan to Kosovo police, KPS.

The memorial near Priština was built to honor Serb heroes – the fallen
soldiers of the medieval Serbian state, who clashed with invading
Ottoman Turks in the Battle of Kosovo in 1389.

KFOR, EULEX and KPS officials will attend the handover ceremony, it has
been announced.

KFOR said that the move reflected "the trust of NATO and nations that
contribute to KFOR that the Kosovo police has the ability to perform
this important task".

According to reports, KPS will be "monitored, guided and counseled" by
EULEX.

KFOR will continue to monitor the security of the monument's perimeter
via patrols and aerial surveillance, it was reported.

KPS said that they were "ready and capable" of taking over the
protection of "all cultural and religious structures in Kosovo" and
expect that they will be guarding "other Orthodox cultural and religious
structures".
