Kosovo: Gunman wounds Serb MP

Pristina, 5 July (AKI) – A gunman shot and wounded Serb member of Kosovo's
parliament, Petar Miletic, outside his apartment on Monday in the divided
northern city of Kosovska Mitrovica. Miletic had to undergo surgery for a
bullet wound but was not in danger, police said.

Police spokesman Besim Hoti said four shots were fired at Miletic in front of
his apartment in Serb-populated northern part of Mitrovica and he was wounded
in a leg.

“We have a description of a possible perpetrator and the investigation is going
on,” Hoti said.

Doctors in Mitrovica hospital said Miletic had undergone surgery and was
recovering in an intensive care unit in the city.

“His life is out of danger,” doctor Ljubisa Jaksic told media.

Miletic, a member of the Independent Liberal Party, is one of 13 Serb deputies
in Kosovo's parliament, which is dominated by ethnic Albanians. Serbs form a
tiny minority in Kosovo of around 100,000 compared with 1.7 million ethnic
Albanians.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia two years ago, but Belgrade does not
recognise Kosovo's secession and has called on Serbs to boycott Kosovo's
institutions.

Several local Serb parties ran in the last parliamentary election and are
represented in the parliament and other Kosovo institutions.

The apparent assassination attempt against Miletic was the second violent
incident in the city in the past four days.

Last Friday, one man was killed and eleven people were wounded when a bomb was
thrown at several hundred Serb demonstrators protesting against the opening of
Kosovo government office in the city.

No arrests have been made in connection with the bombing, with Serbs and ethnic
Albanians blaming each other for the attack.

Kosovska Mitrovica has been a divided city since Serbian forces were driven out
of the province by a NATO bombing in 1999.

Ethnic Albanians live in the southern part of the city and Serbs, Roma and some
ethnic Albanians in the north.
