Greetings News Clipper fans! As you may know, News Clipper development has stagnated over the last couple years. The reason for this is fairly simple: I had a PhD dissertation to complete. Happily, I've completed my degree and taken a faculty position at the College of William and Mary.
This time away from News Clipper development has made a couple things clear to me: - News Clipper pretty much "does the job". It could really use a nice graphical front end, but can be set up by anyone who is comfortable editing configuration files. - The world isn't clamoring for the software. Of course, I'm sure demand would be higher if the handlers were kept up-to-date and new versions were released on a regular basis. - I can't do what I need to do at my "real job" and still keep NC going. Anyone who works for tenure at a research university can tell you that it takes 6 years of overtime. - Preparing the commercial releases of News Clipper are a hassle. Updating the user's manual, compiling the source for multiple platforms, etc. is no fun. But what will become of NC, you ask? Well, as you probably already know, NC is an open source software project. As such, it will continue to live on. In fact, by removing the commercial angle, more people may be willing to contribute to its future development. My plan is to compile the most recent version for the final "commercial version", and release the documentation for free. The open source and commercial web sites will be merged. Users will need to seek support from the mailing lists (which I will continue to read). I still use NC, so development will continue as I need further features or find bugs. I'll continue to maintain the handlers which I use on a regular basis, but will not update other handlers unless nagged by you guys.
