dear louis,

we launched openindexer 2, a free utility which do fulltext search on opendocument files, backup, restore and automatic electronic archiving on cd/dvd including the search engine, transforming the cd/dvd in a mobile archive or encyclopedia of your own documents. openindexer 2 allows network search and is installed as a service which updates the search engine in real time. this allows openindexer 2 to be used also in background in SMEs.

openindexer is technology developed only for the opendocument comunity. it doesn't and won't support microsoft file formats. furthermore it offers functions which are not available for microsoft file formats for free. neither google desktop reaches the functionality of openindexer. in constrast to google, with openindexer you doesn't risk that anybody but you will get in touch with your information.

actually, our objective is to give the maximum of benefit in file management only to opendocument files. in this way we invite people to start to save in ODF. in our eyes it is unlucky to see increase the number of installations of OOo which exclusively save in microsoft file format risking data loss. if the DOC file doesn't correspond with the original file people see OOo as bad office application. this wrong impression can completely been solved by saving in ODF.

openindexer is an argument more for users to save in ODF. google desktop isn't as it supports microsoft file formats.

as openoffice.org got the same philosophy than openindexer, we like to ask you if you are able to support openindexer. after the launch of openindexer 1one year ago you contacted the OOo marketing but we never get a feedback from them. meanwhile we introduced openindexer to all italian IT magazines and are now in contact with the german editors (computer bild, c't, ...). it would be helpful to get assistence from the openoffice.org comunity in order to reach the world press in a more simple way.

we launched openindexer 2 days ago and got downloads from all over the world, canada, australia, hong kong, denmark, uk, germany, .... we got downloads from hospitals, universities. the verbal feedback on the software is 100% positive and we would like to share this benefit with the openoffice.org comunity.

can you help us?

Yes.

I think you need to communicate this to the ODF Alliance, which I would hope could start listing apps. that work particularly with the ODF. I'm cc'ing Simon Phipps of the Alliance (I'm a member, representing OOo).

Simon: would it make sense to list this and other apps somewhere in the ODF Alliance urls?

Further, I think that OOo should have a wiki (or page) listing apps that work with it, extend it, and so on. The problem is that there is little interest in the community for keeping such a page up to date.

So, what I can do is send your press release to our newsletter and see if it makes sense for us to disseminate it, as a further addition to the wealth of ODF/OOo.

Newsletter: perhaps we can include OpenIndexer in the category of new apps extending OOo? or ODF news?

ciao,

Louis

thank you in advance for your kind answer,
alessandro
