Hi

I forward to you a quick and unofficial translation of a press release from the Norwegian government.
  http://odin.dep.no/fad/norsk/aktuelt/pressesenter/pressem/071001-070013/dok-bn.html

This is good news for the OOo-project:

The government goes for open IT-standards.

It will not any more be need for big, international software producers to get access to electronic information from the public sector. The government has decided that The Ministry of Government administration and reform is going to implement several actions to increase use of open IT-standards in public sector.

Up till now much information from the public sector has been able to download on the PC if the software you use is developed by one of the big international IT-companies.

Now this dependency is going to be breached. Simultaneously the government will prepare for data interchange between different IT-systems. IT is today a long row of electronic formats for such interchange, and it is necessary that the systems speak the same «language».

Now the government will cultivate some of those formats to make information interchange simpler and better. In several case this will lead to improved service from departments and municipalities compared with today.

The governmental decision imply that it will be established a standardisation council with broadly representation. It will be developed a reference-catalogue for IT-standards that public units have to adapt..

This catalogue will be continuously updated. The process will run openly, where all units may contribute. The governmental decision implies that some of the standards can gain status as obligatory for public units, while others may be regarded as recommended standards.

That is an excellent idea.  I'm quite excited by the progress of Norway
in ICT policy these recent years.  It'd be nice if the newsletter were to
use a similar tone as the the original press release:

No specific vendor is singled out thus allowing the press release's
readers to focus on the issues.
