[26] MUTV in a bit of mither?
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, April 3, 2002 by tb:
As Bloomberg reports (spotters badge to Fergus):

FOX Sports International attorneys have notified officials of Manchester United
Television (MUTV) and New-York based regional sports TV network Yankees Entertainment
and Sports (YES) over a potential TV rights violation.

YES announced on March 25 that it had reached an agreement with MUTV to air 20 English
Football matches each season via 2-day tape-delay, including English Premier League
matches hosted by Manchester United, starting with Manchester United vs Chelsea on
April 20.

YES parent YankeeNets, Inc. has a joint marketing deal with MUTV parent Manchester
United Football Club PLC.

However, FOX had purchased EXCLUSIVE US TV rights in all languages to the English
Premier League through the 2003-2004 season via its participation in a worldwide
consortium involving FOX parent NewsCorp.

According to FOX spokesman Lou D'Ermilio, FOX intends to "vigorously defend" its
exclusive TV rights to the EPL.

Perhaps MUTV should have checked with uncle Rupert first?

[25] Spanish press on Trisan Becks tackle

Posted Wednesday, April 3, 2002 by tb:
Vassaras pardoned Diego Tristán the red card . once again the Greek referee Vassaras
favoured Deportivo, as the tackle was a clear expulsion . he Tristan brought shame on
his team . even the normally reserved Irureta agreed it should have been a sending off.

Deportivo would have been more heavily beaten had it not been for the inestimable
cooperation of Vassaras, who failed to indicate two clear penalties by Scaloni on
Silvestre and Van Nistelrooy in the space of five minutes . Molina, the posts and the
greek referee Kyros Vassaras conspired to prevent an even wider margin of victory

[23] Spanish press on Becks goal

Posted Wednesday, April 3, 2002 by tb:
BECKS GOAL ... a missile on a perfect parabola . not a goal like any other, it was a
goal to be framed and stuck on the wall, to take off your sombrero to, to fill the
stands with white handkerchiefs, in short a goal to be seen time and time again . a
goal of great beauty, as wonderful as it was unexpected .

Cheers to Basque Dave for the following, taken from As, Marca, El Pais and La Voz de
Galicia

OVERALL . an unquestionable triumph . many years since a team so superior to Depor
passed through Riazor . they were two [goals] and could have been more because the
blue-whites ended the game completely disorientated, out of position and at the mercy
of a team which didn't take advantage of all its scoring opportunities . every time
the Reds attacked it smelt of goal . against a Manchester United bordering perfection
in all areas, the Deportivistas can feel lucky not to have been beaten more heavily .
Depor weren't bad, but el Manchester was infinitely better . they left Depor in the
same position that the Galicians had left Arsenal in a couple of weeks ago, trapped
against a wall against an adversary which completely monopolized posession

Blanc was asked after the game if these kind of nights could make him change his mind
about retiring in May. A clearly hesitating Blanc : "I always take pleasure from the
pitch and I will have to take pleasure till the very end. This can make me think about
it a little more of course, but as far as I am concerned, my decision is taken."

The first signs of a possible u-turn?

[20] Thuram talk

Posted Wednesday, April 3, 2002 by redend:

Our French correspondent reports on rumours doing the rounds on the other side of the
Channel:

Apparently Thuram wants to leave Juventus and favours a move to United. I hear that he
is taking english lessons.

Remember that last summer he wanted to join but we couldn't agree a fee with Parma.

[19] Utd plane struck by lightning
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, April 3, 2002 by redend:

ananova:

United have been delayed coming home after the plane they were due to fly in was
struck by lightning.

They'd been due to fly back this morning but the squad was delayed after the plane due
to return them to Manchester was struck by lightning as it flew to collect them.

Only the crew were on board the Boeing 737 as it travelled from Manchester to La
Coruna this morning to collect the United players.

The plane was not damaged but the United squad had to wait at La Coruna airport for
around an hour while engineers carried out routine safety checks on the plane.

British Airways flight 1999 later touched down at Manchester airport at 12.14pm. A BA
spokeswoman said:

"As it was approaching La Coruna, the plane was struck by lightning. It is quite a
commonplace occurrence but it is strict practice that the aircraft has to be checked
by the captain and engineers on the ground. Checks were carried out and the flight was
about an hour delayed."

[18] Bayern magnaminous as ever

Posted Wednesday, April 3, 2002 by redend:

Not that we're trying to draw on a crude national stereotype or anything ..

But Basque Dave sent us this quote from gracious victors Bayern Munich that for some
reason seems to have annoyed the Spaniards -

Salihamidzic: "Real Madrid shit in their pants. They couldn't cope with the presure"

PR - who needs Paddy Harverson eh?

[17] Seba to Stuttgart?

Posted Wednesday, April 3, 2002 by Farrell:
Not more transfer rumours but JSV, like his Sarah Jessica Parker look-a-like South
American counterpart Diego, has been called up for his country to play in Argentina
against Germany on April 17th.

Its looking a bit ropey as to how much of a part he will play due to his achilles
injury but it looks as though he will travel with them.

Lets just hope he doesnt meet the nutter from Stuttgart that some of the Red News team
met in Frankfurt last year who was wearing a suit with bin man gloves and claimed that
"Stuttgart fans - We f**k the millenium, we dont believe in it". Sometimes its best
not to ask isnt it?

[16] Worthington Cup no more?
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, April 3, 2002 by Farrell:
The Football League is again struggling with money matters as Worthington and the
Brands owners Coors have decided not to extend there sponsorship contract of the
League Cup.

Its also been banded around that the Football League may buy out the remaining year of
the deal in order to atract a new sponsor and it is believed that there would be
plenty of offers if the league succeed in there attempts to get the Glaswegian teams
Rangers and Celtic involved.

There has been no confimation if the Red News teams offer of £4:37, 3/4 of a pack of
chewing gum, a fork and a large silver thing with "Becks" on it that was procured off
the top of a beer pump from a bar on Deansgate (its all I have on my desk) has been
accepted.

Alex Plypin - just a quickie:

Whilst a 2-0 away victory was beyond my wildest dreams - and I can now express a
premonition that we ARE going to meet the scouse - the 2 casualties are a bitter blow
- not to mention the Scholes booking.

However, the meejah will still trump on about the mickies, only because it was not
expected that they would make it this far.

Nightmare Scenario? We spank the arse - now that A Whingeur has assumed The Title -
and we hand it to the dirties!

[14] Becks could be back next week
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, April 3, 2002 by tb:
Latest from Ananova:

David Beckham is walking with a slight limp, but could play in Manchester United's
Champions League return against Deportivo La Coruna next week.

He was stretchered off in stoppage time during United's 2-0 win, following a late
tackle by Diego Tristan.

The England captain was wearing flip-flops and had his left ankle bandaged as he
returned to Manchester. He is due to have a scan later today, but Sir Alex Ferguson
claimed it was not that bad.

The United manager feels he could even return for the second leg of United's
quarter-final at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

"We will know more later, but he could be back for next week," he said.

That will be a huge relief for Ferguson and he is already without the suspended Paul
Scholes and the injured Roy Keane, who will be out for four to six weeks with a
hamstring injury, for the game.

Juan Sebastian Veron could also miss out and the Argentinian has flown to Rome to see
a specialist about his Achilles injury.

However United may try and rush him back to ease their midfield problems for the
second leg.

Manchester City have agreed a new one-year extension to their kit deal with Le Coq
Sportif.

The deal is reported to be worth a six-figure sum.

City's retail controller Duncan Martin said: "We are very pleased with the extension
of the current kit deal.

"Le Coq Sportif have been a valued partner of Manchester City Football Club for more
than three years now and we felt it appropriate to continue our successful
relationship for the final season at Maine Road."

Huge!

[11] Wenger Wouldnt See It Though
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, April 3, 2002 by Farrell:
Arsenal's Patrick Viera, who gave Giggsy the ball, is one booking away from a
suspension. If he picks it up in the North London derby against Spurs then he will be
ruled out of The Arse's league games against Ipswich and West Aaaaam. If he goes
undetected and saves his elbows for one of Steve McClarens lot in the FA Cup Semi
Final against Boro then he would miss the trip to Bolton and possibly the game against
us or the FA Cup Final.
Best get that trip to Specsavers sorted Arsene.

Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid 2-1 last night after coming back from 1-0 down in the
last 10 minutes. Madrid's opener was scored by famous porn star Ron Jeremies, sorry,
Cameroon Midfielder Geremi. The Home side levelled in the 82nd minute with Stefan
Effenberg scoring after earlier missing a penalty. The Winner was scored with 2
minutes to go by Claudio Pizarro.
After the match Bayern Coach Ottmar Hitzfield said "I don't understand all this talk
about Real Madrid being the best team in the world, we always beat them."

Fergie on that challenge on Becks:

"It was a terrible tackle on David, The player only got a yellow and that's really
debatable because it should have been a red card. I'm surprised it was Tristan because
he's a footballer. It's a sore one, but it's too early to say how serious it is. We'll
have a look at it on Wednesday and he will have an X-ray then."

2- 0 win is a great result but for those of us left in Manchester manning the news
desk the talk in the pub (we chose the Quadrant in Stretford - top venue with no blue
mongs) was that it was a great result but at the price of Keano's injury .... lets
hope its not major ..
