[33] Mick Brown on Coruna game
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
United's chief scout, from the official site

'"The way I look at it, if we were drawn at home in a one-off game against Deportivo,
and given a two-goal start, we'd take it. We've given ourselves a real chance, we've
played exceptionally well and I thought our defending was magnificent. Not just the
lads at the back, but throughout the team. We were in good positions to break and
hurt them, and the whole performance was superb in many aspects, and it's given us a
chance to go through. But we couldn't have played much better than we did there. They
hardly had a shot on goal of note, and that was testimony to us as a side defending. I
was thrilled.

You could say we should have won by more, but winning 2-0 there wasn't on many
people's agenda and it was a very good turnover. This is one team who are capable of
beating anyone, anywhere at any time. They've got some exceptional players. I've seen
them against different people and their record speaks for itself. They're great
technicians, great passers of the ball. They've got great understandings and
experience and they all play to each other's strengths. They're a very very good
left-sided team, a lot of their play comes down that side. Valeron is an exceptionally
talented link-up player, Romero the left back is a beautiful technician with a great
left foot - he's a real threat going forward. Fran is a little genius on his day, and
they can all combine down the left.

Then there's Tristan, who's scored a couple here and three at the weekend. He can be
anything. He can be the villain of the piece as he was against us with his challenge
on David Beckham, and he can be quiet on certain days. But when he's on song he's one
of the best goalscorers in Europe. Deportivo's confidence will be high. They know if
they get a goal they're back in there. But they'll have to be mindful that if we score
they'll have a long way to go. I'd rather be coming out of our dressing room than
theirs."

"Webber had a good game at the weekend - it is what you would expect from a player
from a club like Manchester United. He has the desire and the hunger to work hard - I
would be very happy to be working with him next season."

[29] Quote of the day

Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:

"I want us to go out and score goals. We'll keep on trying until they've hit us on the
head and left us for dead."

Javier Irureta

"We should have no problems about motivation. Of course we have to play well. We're
not playing against anyone - it's Manchester United. I never had the chance to play at
Old Trafford and I had a long and successful career as a player."

[27] Tristan on last week, again
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
"They have attached more importance to this than it deserves. It was an incident in
which I arrived a little late but it was just one incident in the game. I have
already asked his forgiveness on the pitch and through the English media and that
should be the end of everything. Those that know me know it wasn't a very normal
reaction from me. I am hurt by how everything has spiralled. It's all the same to me
how they receive me. Everything is over now and the way they acknowledge me isn't all
that important to me. I just hope that United and their fans respect us and we can
give them the same treatment they gave us last week. To win this tie looks like we're
attempting the impossible but though it will be complicated and difficult I don't
think it is impossible."

[25] Fergie on Veron injury
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
“Now Seba’s freshened up and has had a little break and had treatment on his Achilles,
he’ll be ready to go tomorrow night. He was over in Rome last week because he has a
great relationship with the specialist at Lazio. We felt it was fine in that
situation because we were in Spain anyway. So we were happy for him to do that. He’s
had the treatment and brought the report back to our doctor about what they’ve done.
The Achilles will settle down but he has to make sure that before games and training
he does some stretching in that area.”

---------------------------------
[24] Fergie on Keano
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
“We are giving Roy intensive treatment. He is having treatment twice a day. They are
working on him morning and afternoon. We are trying our best. Roy is quite a good
healer but we are talking about the Champions’ League final. It is a week now since he
did the injury and once we get it calmed down completely, the swelling goes down and
the bleeding has stopped then he can start the rehabilitation and recovery. If we make
the European Cup final we want him there. We’ll give him every chance.”

[23] Fergie backs Veron 100%
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
Now we hope that Veron returns that loyalty, stays and then next season has the year
of his life

“Whatever has been said about him it hasn’t stopped Seba looking for the ball in
matches. The one thing you always know about Seba is that when we get the ball he
looks for it. He never stops running to be on the ball and that’s courage. No matter
how he is playing or how the team is playing he will always want the ball. That is the
highest courage you can have in the game. He’s had a lot to cope with coming from
Italy into the Premiership and into a new country and culture. On the footballing side
it is a different kind of game over here and players do take time to settle. The sheer
ferocity of the game in England has probably surprised him. It is never ending . It is
bang, bang, bang all the time. But he’ll cope with that. I think he’s done well and
we’re very pleased with him.”

---------------------------------
[22] Fergie blasts Veron critics
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
“Seba is a marvellous player but I think since England drew Argentina in the World Cup
the Press have turned on him. I don’t know what their agenda is but I think it’s sad,
very sad.”

"We want to take over from United as the dominant force in England - and there would
be no better way of doing it than beating them in the Champions League. I think if
you spoke to most players, though, they would have preferred to meet United in the
final itself."

Come on Bayer!

[17] Midfield trio fit
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
>From the Mirror

'DAVID BECKHAM has been cleared to play against Deportivo La Coruna tomorrow after
shaking off an ankle injury inflicted by Diego Tristan's horror tackle.

Beckham and two of Manchester United's other fitness worries - Juan Sebastian Veron
and Nicky Butt - came safely through a second full day of training yesterday.

Veron has overcome a heel problem and Butt has shown no ill-effects following a clash
of head at Leicester on Saturday.'

---------------------------------
[16] Bizarre...
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
>From PA

'Bids for a piece of used bubble gum a baseball player threw away during a game have
reached nearly £2,300. Luis Gonzalez, of the Arizona Diamondbacks, chewed the gum
during a game against Oakland in Tuscon. Spectator Jason Gabbert got a security guard
at the game to retrieve it. He is raising cash for a school in Minnesota.'

[15] But don't deny that you nearly did last summer
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
Patrick Vieira when asked if he would ever join United

"The answer is no. I would never play in England in another shirt than Arsenal's. If I
was to leave it would, therefore, be elsewhere. I want my future to be fixed before
the World Cup. The ball is in the directors' court. If the club want me to stay, I
will stay. The fact our manager Arsene Wenger has extended his contract is an
important element for my future. He's always been behind me, as with all of his
players. The relationship he enjoys with his squad is, frankly, extraordinary. He
really listens to you."

Don't think we need to insert a joke after re-reading that last bit: 'He's always been
behind me, as with all of his players. The relationship he enjoys with his squad is,
frankly, extraordinary'

[13] Giggsy on Wednesday
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
"We're brimming with confidence and if we fail to reach the final now we'll be
devastated. You've got to say it's there for the taking. There's no danger of us
sitting back and trying to protect our lead against Deportivo. As we proved last
Tuesday attack really is the best form of defence. If we can get one goal the tie
should be all over."

---------------------------------
[12] Giggsy on Butt
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
"Our midfield could have an unfamiliar look about it. But we're lucky because we've
got quality internationals like Nicky to cover these situations. It was a bad
challenge on Becks, especially so late in the game in a nothing area of the pitch, but
it looks like he's been relatively lucky. I know Tristan has apologised for the tackle
but it's easy to be sorry after the event and it could have been much, much worse."

---------------------------------
[11] Nicky Butt on being a squad player
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
"I haven't even looked at my 1999 medal since the night I won it. I gave it to my dad,
because it's in the past, forgotten. I don't want to look back, I want to go and win
more things. Being European champions was unbelievable, but we can't be one-hit
wonders, I do get upset about not playing sometimes, but then I look at my stats at
the end of each season and always find I've played 30 games. The manager has always
said he wants me to stay here and that's why I keep signing contracts. I never feel
I'm under-appreciated here. It would be very difficult for any of us to leave. You win
everything at United, you've got the best facilities and the best manager. Not playing
every week can affect your confidence and your development, and I regret it when I'm
not in the England team. But you don't get to have it all. I've won everything, played
a lot of games for United and I've got a great job."

---------------------------------
[10] Nicky Butt wants more
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
"Coruna made a mistake by talking about how they were going to beat us. It's
disrespectful to say that about any team. But there's a long way to go, even though
people are saying it's over. They're a good team who thrive on confidence and if they
get a good start, anything could happen. I've always wanted to win, whether it was
football, school sports, playing cards with my mates. All of us — Becks, Scholes, Ryan
Giggs, Gary Neville — are sore losers and that's a credit to the gaffer and the
coaches who brought us through. A European Cup semi-final with Liverpool would be
brilliant, a chance to right wrongs. We don't want anyone to take our mantle and if we
stand still we're aware that Liverpool and Arsenal will come past us. I'm nowhere near
happy with what I've won yet, or done in my career."

Posted Tuesday, April 9, 2002 by bar-knee:
"We have exceeded expectations getting this far so quickly but I'm convinced we will
win this trophy at some stage. To be considered a truly great manager, you have to win
the European Cup. It took Sir Alex Ferguson 13 years to do it but a good friend of
mine said recently we are probably the club that has made the biggest strides over the
last few years."

[4] Not a long season for Pires

Football Association's head of medicine, Alan Hodson

"Over the course of a long season, it might be assumed that the more fatigued players
become susceptible to injury. However, traumatic injuries such as that suffered to the
anterior cruciate ligament by Robert Pires can happen at any stage of the season and
at any time in a game."

So Wenger, wrong again...

The full words to the United classic song for those who have asked for it. We also
include the full lyrics to the original Creedence song if as it would be nice to add
another verse to it.

I hear the Stretford End arising,
I see trouble on the way
I hear the Stretford End arising
I see trouble on the way

So don't go out tonight
unless you're wearing Red & White
I see the Stretford End arise...

Let's hope it'll be a timely portender for a truly resurrected Stretty!

CREEDENCE VERSION
I see a bad moon rising
I see trouble on the way
I see earthquakes and lightnin'
I see bad times today

{Refrain}
Don't go 'round tonight
For it's bound to take your life
There's a bad moon on the rise

I hear hurricanes a blowin'
I know the end is comin' soon
I fear rivers over flowing
I hear the voice of rage and ruin

{Refrain}

Hope you got your things together
Hope you are quite prepared to die
Looks like we're in for nasty weather
One eye is taken for an eye

Well,...{Refrain twice}
