Hi Kim, I too am a newcomer to the Newton. I have been successful connecting to a MP 2100 from a Powerbook G4 running OS 9.2.2 using the Newton Connection Utility, a Xircom USB to serial adapter, and the normal serial cable. If your MP 130 is running Newton OS 2.0 it may work for you. I have a MP 130 also but haven't tried it yet.
