Thank goodness Kyle. The thought of wiring sends me a-shiverin'. It took me
most of the summer to work out the dead tail light on my bike. After bypassing
the turn signal relay it became apparent that the short was in my turn signal
wiring harness. I went to my favorite junk yard and got the whole harness,
signals and all, off of an '84 and replaced that. (Minus the built-in choke
since I have the separate one on my '83....I just removed the cable and put a
screw in the hole).
IT WORKED! I am finally able to stay out after dark.
The wiring on these things can be a bugger. HotrodMamma

Well, once I started wiring up the starter button correctly everything
started working right. Funny how that works. Electronically I don't have any
issues anymore. Apart from the flaky sending unit in the fuel tank, but that
I'm not too worried about.

Hey Kyle, why not try the handlebar grounding since I think it is
providing another path. The clutch lever switch allows starting with the bike
in gear. Remember Honda switches on the cold side.

That's pretty much the same symptoms I had, but not because of my
clutch switch, my problem was the other side. The previous owner had cut the
wires off the starter button so close that I couldn't see how it was originally
wired up. I referred to my lying clymer manual and it told me to hook up the
wrong wires. While it was hooked up wrong, it wouldn't start the bike, but it
did what you're describing. My problem was obviously a circuit being shorted
into another wrong circuit. You're most likely isn't the same since your's
actually starts, but it sounds like you have a short somewhere along the line.

In previous posts I have explained how my 1985 650 has some wierd
quirks. For example when I stop the bike (at a light ot stop sign
or
whatever) it just dies. After thinking about it for a while I
think
the clutch switch might have a lot to do with it. When I turn the
key
on the neutral, tail light, and oil light all come on, if I pull
the
clutch in (and hear that little click) those lights go off and the
headlight and taillight now come on.
              My question is:
#1 Is this normal, does your bike do this too?
#2 Has anyone had a bad clutch switch before and what were your
              symptoms?

              As always, thanks, Jay.
