When a battery is low on water, it usually does not perform well. The lower the level, the weaker the output. If it is really bad the battery will need to be charged after filling because it will not put out enough voltage to start the bike/car/truck, etc., after the water mixes with the remaining electrolyte. Also, the plates will oxidize when exposed to air, as when the level of electrolyte falls below the surface of the plates. This is not good either. Furthermore, when charging, if you leave the caps off, you may notice bubbles coming up between the plates. This is oxygen and hydrogen. It is a good idea NOT to light up a smoke in the vicinity while waiting for the battery to charge, and also to turn the charger off BEFORE disconnecting the cables. If there is enough hydrogen present, it could get very messy. I have seen a battery blow up from such a mistake, and the guy knew better, too. Fortunately for me I was not close by...

I am having an issue, occasionally, with my 83 650. Two weeks ago I went on a long ride, 3 hours, with no problems. That was a Saturday, on Monday I went out to ride to work and heard only a grunt from the starter. The battery was low on water. Filled with distilled and plugged in my charger and drove the car to work. After work started right up and has each time (5) I have gotten on it since then. So any ideas what it could be? Thank you for your help and advice in advance.
