I still remember when to configure the sound card was a whole issue... I'm quite impress with some recent distributions that are really making an effort to capture the windows user. I've testing in the las few weeks a new distro a just found: www.elivecd.com The hardware recognition is quite good, the configuration is more than simple, and so far has work very well for me. This is the one I'm using to convince my wife. Take a look of it.
