Back when cars were simpler it was a Halloween trick to unbolt the rear axle,
rotate it (around the drive shaft) 180 degrees, and bolt it back in. Wow! 1
speed forward, 3 in reverse!

Too bad that's not easier to do. It would make a great prank to play on a
buddy when he had an important meeting to get too. I'd love to explain to an
officer why I was doing 60mph backwards on the freeway.

Yeah, but it's the holy grail of short track racers to get a small
block Chevy to run backwards. It would make the engine torque complement the
left turnz.. Most track rules forbid this... like it's common... not. But if
you could..don't. Ordinarily the torque loads the right front wheel and helps
to unload the left front. Reverse rotation would be a boon to traction. Smokey
Yunick worked on it for years.

My buddy has an old Yamaha RD400 that did this one morning. He
turned the key on and the bike just started right up without him having to kick
it first. He shrugged and went back inside while it warmed up. A few minutes
later he came out and went to take off, but went backwards. All he had to do
was kill it and kick it to go forwards again. Our nighthawks being 4stroke
would have something terribly wrong with them if they were running backwards.

Many years ago, when I was the Service Manager at Sears, we had a
motorcycle come in for service, and the owner wanted the timing checked -
starting problem, as I remember.. My engine/tractor/etc. mechanic - NOT
motorcycle - agreed to check it, using the service manual, which was very
clear. But he had never ridden a motorcycle, and refused to start with this
one. When done, it started and ran beautifully, and the satisfied customer
took it away..................... only to return angrily because all the gears
were now reverse, and there was no forward! The engine was 2 cycle, and the
timing was incorrectly advanced enough to cause the engine to "backfire" before
reaching TDC, and it ran backwards perfectly, thus the "all reverse/no forward
gearing. A stumper at first, but with the timing set correctly, all was OK.
