The starter button performs two functions. when depressed, it opens the head light supply circuit (to reduce load) and makes the connection to the starter relay. Trace the diagram and you will see all power to the headlight circuit is routed through the switch (button) I have a bike that happened to and my cure was to hot wire the headlight circuit and install a switch in-line.
