The oil is engine oil.. really hard to seal one up good enough to prevent that
from happening. It's less of a cause of your problem as is the years of use. I
file it under the heading of sh%t happens. You can try a film of Hylomar on the
O ring and around the bearing if you want. Oil vapor and crankcase pressure
makes it happen. The burn on the armature is what put it out of commission. As
the brushes wear down, the spring tension is reduced and that causes more
arcing, causes more burning... when you rebuild it be sure to clean out grooves
too. carefully.

Cleaned the crude and armature, put her all back together and bingo,
we have starter again!!!  Whoo Hoo!!  I plan to order rebuild kit as
the brushed were pretty worn and the case o rings expanded sitting out
and dont seal well.

The inside was dripping with oil. Is there a seal or is the bearing
bad allowing all that oil to get in the starter.  There was a little
in out play in the bearing/gear spline. I removed the snap ring but
the spline would not come out of the bearing. I tapped it on the bench
but it would not budge so I did not try to force and put the snap ring
back on.  Is there an o ring back there that I need to change?

Thanks Dennis!!!

I want to start taking longer rides and dont want to get stuck.

I have cleaned and synked the carbs, sealed the fuel tank, replaced
fork seals, rebuilt starter, is there anything else I shoul look at
(preventative maintenance) ???  Or hard to find part I should stock
for future.  I plan to keep the bike a long time.
