The overhangs are very practical. They make for more points to attach to. I use 
the OEM racks and they don't have tie-down points. That guy did a fine job. Raw 
aluminum would look good on a 84~85 model. Black for the 86 (his)

I found a page where a guy made his own home made luggage rack for his 86 700S. 
Not bad but I think I'd cut the crossbars so they didn't overhang the "Z" bars.
