There comes a point when some sort of explanation is in order. Without asking
why you asked, a clutch that is always engaged is said to be "dragging" It does
not open enough when it is disengaged. Barring an improper assembly we are left
with two causes; improper adjustment or the use of a substance (in the oil)
that caused the clutch lining to swell. A properly adjusted clutch has only
.060" total of clearance. Typically there are seven sets of discs in a clutch
(some less, some more) Half of those are of a material that is fibrous and can
swell in the presence of certain chemicals. The only one I am certain of is
STP. The net result of it's use is a clutch that does not disengage and slips.
I am not aware of any other oil or additive that can cause this. I see many
bikes with all kind of magical oils and have yet to see any clutch problems
arise. Past all the hype, clean oil is still the best.

Would adding a motorcycle oil that doesn't have additives for clutches cause
the clutch to be constantly engaged?

Amsoil has a toll free number.  Call them and ask, because all their oils are
formulated differently.  They at Amsoil do recommend 20-50 for some bikes, but
I think they are Harleys, Beuels (spelling - ?), and some others.  Hondas and
several others, if I recollect rightly, take a lighter grade.
