This is what model ? Late 750 ? I can take you through the whole process, but
it is rather long. The drift to left is troubling. ( stop me...) Next is
off-site.

My liability is limited to my own neck, but since I'm fond of it, I
prefer the holistic approach.

I got into this originally because of two related issues.  The first
was that the previous owner had apparently removed the wheel to
install a new tire.  When he replaced the axle, he left off the
outside right spacer which allowed the wheel to slide left and right
on the axle, which buggered up the bearings.  The second issue was the
new tire was too tall which caused it to scrape against the fender as
the wheel flopped back and forth on the axle.  As you can imagine, the
bike also steered hard, especially to the left.

What I've done in chasing a solution, is rebuild the axle assembly
(axle, both bearings, speedo gear housing, seals and spacers) and
replace the tire with a stock size Avon.

Though handling is improved immensely, it still has a lingering slight
tendency to steer left, not severely but noticeable whenever I relax
my grip on the bars.  My thinking is that this is a third issue,
unrelated to the first two.

I've not gotten into the rear wheel other than to check the chain
adjusters.  They are set to identical specs on both sides.  I plan
sometime in the next couple weeks to replace the rear tire, so I'll be
looking closely at everything back there.
