You're off to fine start. You have a bike that runs. While you're learning to
ride a two wheeler don't be concerned about high speed performance. It's too
bad it isn't a 450 Rebel, they had a lower seat height. It can be lowered a bit
but probably not as much as you'd like. I don't like to diss a dealer but
your's sounds somewhat incompetent or indifferent... Most of the members have
encountered dealers that won't even look at a bike that old. The performance
problem can be worked out... in time. With more details about it, you'll get
help. We'll need a riding evaluation from a more experienced rider to gather
more information and diagnose it. A bike that starts and idles smoothly below
about a thousand RPM is in pretty good health. The rest is in the details.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] Honda Nighthawk 450 1986

Hi all,

I have been reading the posts and wanted to ask a question. We have this bike
at the Honda shop right now. When we bought it, it wasn't running. They
cleaned the carborator, put in a new battery tweaked the sticking throttle and
some other minor stuff. The bike had been sitting about two years. Gas still
clean and no rust in tank. The bike had been dumped and gear shift was bent
and a dent in the tank. Nothing really major. The shop took it out for a spin
and said it started off fine but when it got to top speed it cut out and lost
power. They recleaned the carborator and did another run. Still the same
thing. Now they are saying something about the compression and timing. My
question is what do you think would cause the engine to lose power when brought
to top speed. I will also have to lower the bike because I am only 5'2". What
kind of cost am I looking for this to be done. Sorry to seem so ignorant but
have motorcycle license but don't
think a two-day course prepares me for the highway and around town. This is
my first two-wheel bike, as we have a trike. Way different animal. My idea of
tinkering with bike is to take to a mechanic. I do realize I need to learn how
to tinker with my own bike to keep in shape but this is my bike to learn how to
ride on and I really don't know what questions I should be asking Honda
dealership about the length of time taking to fix bike and what really is going
on. I do do the checkout on the trike.

Thanks for your help.
