Angela, I remember back in Venezuela I used to drive the Jeep Cherokee of a friend. It was brand new and it used to do that sometimes. We never got to know why, specially because you don't need much choke in the tropic. I do remember it will rev at much higher rpms than 1k. If I shout it down and fire up right away, it would come normal. Have you tried that? Definitively it doesn't sound to be a problem with the engine itself.
