I've used and like SpinRite a lot. They got a port testing too that's brilliant when you want to see how 'visible and exposed' your system is from the outside.

Perhaps the disc is toasted, but I've seen many Computer guys giving up on drives because the first sector went bad or just because their particular tool doesn't work.
