In my experience, octane rating will not have too much effect on MPG.  My
owner’s manual calls for R+M/2 or AKI of 86 or better.  see Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating .  I often use 89 or mid grade
because I can get it w/out ethanol.
MY ‘84 CB650SC is “cold blooded” and requires choke to start and run for a
minute or three or 6 before it  runs well.  I often forget to turn it off/push
to the counterclockwise/up position, and ride for extended times with the choke
on.  Could that have been a factor?  I usually get around 40 mpg around town if
riding “gentle”, up to 45+ highway @ 60 MPH, considerably less if “hot rodding
it”.

The bike 84 nighthawk cb650sc and after 4 weeks of hard work putting this old
girl back together it's 95% there ,So my Question is I put 55 miles on her
first day on the road and i went though 2 gals of gas put i know I used the
wrong octane of 87 . I read the manual and it should be 93 octane . Could that
be the factor or something else..? Everyone is so help full I feel you are in
my garage side by side with me... --
