It's my understanding that when you roll off throttle you cut off the main jet circuits. This temporarily leans out the cylinders, if the pilot circuits are also lean then cylinders will miss-fire dumping their charge into the exhaust, where another cylinders burning charge ignites it, causing a little explosion, or a popping sound.
