They are only almost invisible because of the juggernaut marketing machine that is Harley. Believe me, I see far more metrics (cruisers + sportbikes) than I see legitimate Harleys.
Part of the issue, as I see it, is the market for a touring bike that isn't a cruiser is somewhat small. Honda has the upmarket "rolling couch" segment totally locked down tight with the Goldwing; everyone has heard of those.
