thanks all for the help.. I think I’ll get it squared away...

I’m going to take a deeper look a the fuse holder/fuses and get that all
tightened up..hate to have my headlight go out at nigh when I hit a bump .

I’ll probably end up replacing that flasher relay as well since I seem to have
just lost my flash again...

the joys of old wiring.

cheers

None of the Nighthawks had rear running lights, as far as I know.

  thanks Allen;

I found the flasher relay per Kurt’s advise ....pulled it apart , put it
back together again...no change..

Except then I had no taillight or licence plate light either and my front
turn signal running lights weren’t coming on at all..

I have discovered something new though.. My fuses are loose in the fuse
holder and when I wiggle them I get “things happening”. At times no headlight ,
no horn, then headlights , horn no running lights..etc etc.. The latest is all
lights and flashers are now working except my rear turn signals are not on as
running lights.. But I can’t remember whether they are supposed to be or not on
this bike ?

I’ve definitely got something going on with the fuse holder that is causing
issues, and maybe that was combined with a bad relay connection at the same
time to provide some confusing diagnosis..??

Does anyone know if the 550 rear signals are normally on as running lights or
not ? Right now the answer to that would be helpful...

  thanks for any input

  Jeff

What you have is expected behavior of a broken or missing flasher relay. Try
pulling it out and re-plug it in.

  Kurt;

  Its all stock..

  nothing flashes.... period.
the fronts come on as running lights but the side I switch on goes out when I
do.
the rears do nothing..no running lights ..no flashing

I do have the shop manual and wiring diagram but wiring schematics always
make my brain hurt. I will study it and see if anything occurs to me..

  thanks for your input..

Stock fronts? The fronts often have a running light function, which if shut
off when you actuate that side's turn signal. Thus, go to R and the right front
light goes out.

If neither front nor rear flash, check to make sure your flasher relay is
properly connected and functioning first, before you start replacing parts
willy nilly.

Do you have a manual or wiring diagram for your bike?

    any electrical wizards out there?

    All my lights worked fine.

I recently replaced the turn signal stay stem on my right rear.. very
simple task..I gently pulled two little wires out of their connectors and then
put them back in when done..green into green and blue into blue...even
photographed it beforehand to be sure I didn't mess up. I didn't put any stress
on any other wiring in the harness. I was very careful.

Now both rear signals do not work and do not even light up. The front turn
signals light up, but when I push the thumb switch to the R the R front signal
light goes out, and when I push it L the left front signal goes out..

Everything else is fine, the fuses seem all good ..I even swapped them all
around to see if it was fuse related... no change

What the heck could I possibly have done? Or what an unlucky coincidence
that something in the signals went at exactly the same time as I did a simple
unplug/replug?

    Any pro-tips out there?

    thanks

    Jeff
