Have not done this personally with a Nighthawk, but did with a Harley 
Sportster back in the day:

Disconnect cables and wiring and anything else connected to the engine 
(chain, etc.).  Drain the crankcase and carbs and  tilt the whole bike to 
the left onto something thick and soft (like an old sofa cushion from a 
thrift store).  Unscrew engine bolts so the motor rests on the cushion, 
then lift the frame off the engine.
