That "haven't started it in a long time" is going to be the undoing. Gasoline breaks down into easily evaporated light bits and viscous, gooey heavy bits surprisingly quickly, and those latter parts play merry hell on carb parts like jets and float valves.
You can try the tapping trick, then run lots of gas with high solvent content through them in a short time (ie go for a long weekend ride), but it will only be a stopgap measure, not as good as a cleaning. Another trick: run ethanol laden gasoline. The E is a great solvent, and it replaces several of the more offensively gooey compounds in gas but evaporates without residue. It's also good for temporarily reviving dirty carburetors. Good luck.
