Well, this story has a happy ending. My son dropped into our local locksmith and discovered they DO make keys from motorcycle ignitions so I contacted friend who likes to tinker in bikes and we wrestled the ignition out of the 250 and I ran it down to the locksmith while my son was at work.
Less than 30 minutes later they had made two keys from the ignition AND made me an extra key for my GL1500 too (since I only had one).
