I started to notice an odd noise while riding -- mostly when coasting and decelerating. No apparent loss of performance but still concerning. So, I put the bike up on the centerstand and inspected the chain and sprockets which seemed fine and reasonably well lubed and adjusted. Then, I started the bike and let it run in 1st on the centerstand. This is the horrifying result:
