I don't agree with your assertion that Nikon's matrix metering will
always find the correct exposure if you just placed the subject in the
center of the viewfinder. That's what the center-weighted metering
mode is for. The intent of the matrix metering mode was to figure out
the 'correct' exposure when the subject was NOT in the center of the
scene by evaluating the brightness and contrast of each segment in the
'matrix', fitting the data to the metering algorithm, and deciding on
an appropriate exposure setting. The system doesn't work well if there
are bright or dark features in the periphery of the scene. In such
cases, a subject placed in the center will not be properly exposed.
