I have the 35-70mm f/2.8 and love it, for it's speed, sharpness and build quality. However, if you feel the 35-70 range is too restrictive, try the 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 or the 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5. Both lenses are compact, priced below your budget and deliver the quality you are seeking. In my opinion the three aforementioned lenses will deliver a superior image than the 24-120 lens.

Subject: 24-120 F3.5-5.6 or 35-70 F2.8 [v04.n175/22]

I am thinking to buy a Nikon zoom lens and I have strong hesitation
between 24-120 F3.5-5.6 and 35-70 F2.8. Both are in the same price range
- - $620 and $700. It looks like the first one gives more possibilities
but another is sharper and faster. I am not a professional photographer
but want to have something which gives true Nikon quality.
