I'm inclined to agree, we all are Nikon users mainly for its lenses.
But what Nikon offers in the range wide-tele AF zooms is strange:

Amateur lenses
24-50 3.5-4.5
24-120 3.5-5.6
28-70 3.5-4.5
28-80 3.5-5.6
28-85 3.5-4.5
28-105 3.5-4.5 (coming soon)
35-80 4-5.6
35-105 3.5-4.5
35-135 3.5-4.5

Pro lenses:
35-70 2.8
28-70 2.8 AF-S (coming soon)

I own the 28-70 3.5-4.5, good lens but not up the standard of my 24 2.8
and 80-200 2.8.
I am not a pro and therefore can't justify the huge amount of
money requested for the AF-S 28-70 2.8 (it will be at least TWICE the
35-70 2.8 and 1.5 times the AF-Dn 80-200 2.8, not to mention that I
will never be able to use it on my F801s).

Nikon has by far the best 35mm system available but there is a gap
between the six amateur models from 24/28 to 70/120 and the luxury 28-70
2.8 AF-S.
Hence the popularity of the Tokina 28-70 2.6-2.8 and of the Sigma 28-70
2.8.

Bye all, thanks Andrew and Happy New Year.
