I read this on the net couple of years ago and tried it.
It worked for me and it may work for you too.

I use a piece of exposed film 5-6 inches long. I attached two
strips of double sided  tape (sticky on both sides) to one end of
the film (about half an inch off the end). I push the piece of film through
the film container then start turning the knob on the container and pull the
film into the container until it gets stuck (couple of turns are usually enough).
Then start pulling the film out from the other end very gently. It gets
the leader out, stuck to the tape on it.

This has worked for me all the time. I tried it at least 15-20 times
and never failed.

I do not take any reponsibility if you try it and ruin your film.  I did not
want to write this sentence here but I live in the US!
