James, Nikon purposely blocked out the ability of the IX-Nikkors to be mounted on the standard 35mm SLRs. The main reason is because the IX-Nikkor lenses have been designed to have a covering power for the smaller 16x24mm APS film. If these lenses would be used on 35mm cameras you would have fall off in the corners. As you mentioned, the IX-Nikkor lenses also have a potruding front element that prevents mounting on 35mm Nikons. Keep in mind that the reason the IX-Nikkor lenses were introduced was to provide smaller optics with greater range that would more appropriately match the small size of the Pronea cameras.
