The fact that you are shooting B&W has nothing to do with the meter.  The meter
evaluates the scene and uses the information including color to search through
a database of scenes to determine the correct exposure.  Nikon does not
recommend any exposure compensation when using the matrix meter since it should
be right on the nose.  This color information has no correlation at all to the
film.  It just extra information for the database lookup.
