The reason to change from the 50mm f4 to the 50mm f2.8 is not to get an improvement in quality, but to have a brighter image with the lens wide open when focusing, and to get the benefit of the reduced depth-of-focus afforded by the wider aperture, which allows for more precise focusing. The lens should be stopped down after focusing to take advantage of the improved sharpness that results from stopping the lens down to mid range, and to increase exposure times so the print may be dodged/burned, if necessary.
