Erich, I will make a presumtion that should be valid. It, perhaps does not go over the hard outer part of the eyepiece. Try this. Gently but firmly turn the the hard,round outer part of the eyepiece in a "counter-clockwise" motion and it will most likely unscrew as it does on my 8008. I do not have the rubber eyepiece on my camera but I do believe that every part of a Nikon is made to come apart without to much effort. Forcing it doesn't ever help if it simply doesn't fit. I have been using Nikons since the original F model in 1960 and everything has always fit without causing any problems. The "original" eye socket may at first be a bit tight but it really should come off easily. Hope this helps.
