That doesn't sound like someone who is not independent. Being a beta tester (it sounds like that is what he was to me) does not imply a lack of independence either. In fact, being a beta tester implies independence. When engineering a new product, testing is done in-house first (alpha testing). After passing the alpha stage it goes out to beta testers outside of the company where the beta testers use it in more realistic situations and gives feedback on how the product held up. I have been on engineering teams where I dealt with beta testers and worked to solve design flaws that surfaced during beta testing. David Johnson
