The problem with converting film-cameras to digital (and thus
retaining one's investment in lenses), is that it's only a matter of
time before digital zooming replaces good old glass. If they can
give us a whole bunch of pixels and a good 20mm (or wider) lens,
we'll have all the focal lengths we need by means of digital zoom.
Some disclaimers that come to mind:
1. I plan to stick with my FG and nice glass because, to be frank,
10 hours/day of high-paced software engineering is about all
the 'digital' I need in my life.
2. I like the look of a 300/2.8 as much as the next guy, but when
they demonstrate a digitally zoomed (i.e., effective 300mm FL)
taken with a short, light lens (like a 20mm), I think we'll see
a major change in people's views.
3. Digital image stabilization, another topic altogether, will make
current IS technology look like a joke.
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em (unless you're a retro-grouch like me!).
Cheers!
