The clerk at the photo store said the trick with photography was not the camera but the photographer and stay with what I have. I know this is a sophisticated experienced groujp and my quetion is elementary, but I would appreciate your opinions. Jim said: Carole, To some degree he is right. Your equipment is less important than you. However, sometimes your equipment may not do what you want it to do. I think that a 35mm SLR of any type or vintage will probably serve you better than a point-and-shoot camera, which is what you seem to have right now. You might want to read an introductory book on photography (John Hedgecoe's books are very good), and decide what you need in a camera. Then you can decide for yourself if you want to upgrade. I think an excellent place to start for any beginner is a 35mm SLR, particularly a manual-focus, manual-exposure SLR, but you can use almost any autofocus, automatic camera in this fashion.
