Recently, there is a debate on 400mm/f2.8 vs. 500/600mm f4

IMO, for birds, you need a 600mm/f4 or at least a 500mm/f4. For
large mammals, 400mm could be too long depending on how far
away you are. Essentially no one lens can do all. I personally prefer
a combination of a 300mm/f4 and a 500mm/f4. However, other people
have different opinions. The photo.net thread should give you the
different sides of the story.
