Dear Lou

In reply to you query:

"So I have a simple question about AF cameras: In general, is it possible
to use AF
to focus on something and then turn off the AF feature completely, to
preserve the focus setting for a series of shots? I know about the AF lock
feature on most/all Nikons with AF, but I'm talking about a situation where
I definitely don't want the camera refocusing, and keeping my finger on a
button would not be reasonable."

Yes it is possible to do this in most (all?) cases (I use F90X and F70).
Simply switch on the autofocus, using the switch on the lower left front
(i.e using left hand as holding the camera to shoot). Depress the shutter
to activate autofocus and metering. Now switch off the autofocus (left
hand again). Recompose and depress shutter to reassess metering etc, the
fully depress to shoot. Of course, in situations where the target or you
move, or where depth of field is critical you could get into difficulty
using this method.

Hope this helps.

Tom Matheson
