Did you try this under conditions which would normally require an exposure
of *much* more than 8 seconds? Like night shots, say? It might be an idea to
set up a scene that needs *just* 8 seconds, then stop down a half stop or
so, less if possible, and try it again. I believe the F3 will give more than
the advertised 8 seconds, but if it's required to give *much* more, it might
do what you're describing. Always assuming it's not the battery, of
course...
