Hi Robert...it sounds as though you *are* viewing in stop-down mode, even if
you didn't do it. Have you looking through the lens, off-camera to make sure
the lightway is unobstructed, and tried 'twanging' the stop-down lever on
the back to see that the aperture is moving freely? The only thing I can
think of that would give you a dark image when you look through the camera
is that the lens is, somehow, stopped down. This would explain the
focus-hunting too...
